Vortex Diamondback 10×42 vs 12×50, which one should I choose?. I have seen this question been asked over and over again by most hunters. That is why today, I took it upon myself to gather some research and users opinions about the two binoculars to share with you.

It is not surprising why the question is mostly always about these two models; 10×42 and 12×50. It is because many serious hunters understand that full-size binoculars are equally as important as their guns. If one wants to have a successful hunting experience., binoculars are a must-have.

Another interesting thing is that these binoculars provide you with enough magnifying power and aperture at the same time, they are easy to manage with the hands than binocular power that is higher than them.

Optical Performance

All the Vortex  Diamondback binoculars have dielectric fully multi-coated lenses and phase-corrected prisms. This is done to enhance light transmission and contrast. This gives them that impressive optical quality.

Since both  Diamondbacks have good optical quality and durability, the features that make them stand apart are their specifications.

when it comes to magnifying power and aperture, the Vortex Diamondback  12×50 has more power than the Diamondback 10×42 binoculars. This makes them more powerful especially if you are looking at your target from a long distance. You will be able to see more details of the target than the 10 times power.

However, the field of view of the Diamondback 10×42 is 330 ft/1000 yds while the FOV of the Diamondback 12×50 is at 271 ft. at 1000 yds. As can be seen, is very obvious that the 10×42 model has a wider field of view.

Comparing their eye relief for comfortable viewing, the 10×42 binoculars have longer eye relief at 16 mm which makes them able to accommodate eyeglass wearers. The 12×50 model is having shorter eye relief at 14 mm especially for those that wear glasses. So if you are eyeglass wearer who wants something that is more comfortable to use, you might prefer the 10×42.

Both are fully weatherproof with argon gas purge inside and O-ring sealed making them waterproof and fog proof. You can, therefore, use them in harsh weather conditions without fear that they will get spoiled by the rise and fall of temperatures, rain or fog.

Weight and Dimensions

From the specifications table above,  the Vortex Diamondback 10×42 is both lighter and compact compared to the Diamondback 12×50 binoculars but that is to be expected. Because of the size of the prisms and the objective lenses of the 12×50 model which are bigger.

Body construction/Chassis

The Vortex Diamondbacks are sleek, have short hinge design and have a durable aluminum body with rubber armor and thumb indents which leave more room for your hands creating an easier, secure and non-slip grip.

Included in the package are:

  • Rainguard Eyepiece Cover
  • Tethered objective lens covers
  • Comfort neck strap
  • Deluxe custom-molded carry case

Final Verdict

Do you wish for more field of view, lightweight and eye relief?. Then, the Vortex Diamondback 10×42 binoculars would be better for you. However, if more power for long-distance viewing and more details is what you would prefer, then you would find the Vortex Diamondback 12×50 binoculars preferable. But they are heavier and bulkier. Which means you have to be willing to invest in a tripod or any mounting device.
